Book Of The Week: This Is How We Do It

Remember way back on January 1st when you were getting started with your New Year’s resolutions?

You know, the one where you were going to hit the gym every day or build that new business?

How’s that going?

I’ve been struggling with my goals this year and it’s only February.

I never would’ve guessed I would get a pep talk from Kevin Hart in 2023.

“This Is How We Do It” is a short adaptation of the audible book “The Decision.”

Kevin calls it Mental Boot Camp…I call it a swift kick in the a**.

I read every day so that I have a constant reminder of where I’m headed in life. It’s so easy to get on automatic pilot with work and life. Staying present can be difficult.

We all have moments when we need to be reminded of who we are and what we’re capable of.

Here are some highlights from Kevin’s toolbox:

Mindset Is Everything

Kevin Hart doesn’t sugarcoat anything and reminds us that negativity is all around us these days. There’s just no way around it, especially with the internet being what it is.

But you control your mindset and how you feel about yourself and your direction in life.

It’s important to have a positive mindset, but that doesn’t mean you will always be happy-go-lucky. It just means that you don’t dwell on the negativity, and you keep trying to move forward.

I love the idea that every obstacle becomes an opportunity. When you have a positive mindset, you can see possibilities, even in the most demanding circumstances.

Remember, it’s all about where you set your sights. If you’re focused on doing well in life, having a great relationship, a loving family, etc.: that’s where you’re headed.

It Takes Time To Create Change

For a lot of people, staying consistent is a huge challenge. But Kevin Hart reminds us that change doesn’t come in a split second. It takes consistency and incremental change over time to see the results that you want.

If you want to build muscle, you wouldn’t drink one protein shake and go to the gym for a couple of days.

If you want a loving, lasting relationship, you wouldn’t marry the first person you meet on the first date. (Well, I guess some people may go down that road.)

You have to stay consistent and build. This will help your mind realize what it’s capable of. Think of the small wins as a way of changing your belief system.

Final Thoughts

I’ve only scratched the surface of the wisdom that Kevin Hart brought in “This Is How We Do It.”

But none of these tools will benefit you if you don’t know what you’re after.

I could set the goal to buy a big house, but if I don’t have a deep desire for that, I’ll never have the determination necessary to achieve that goal.

You are the only one who can decide what’s important for you and your life. Keep your eyes on that prize.

When life seems like too much, or you’re not living the life you want, refer back to Kevin Hart’s tools for mental toughness to get you back on the right track.

I hope this quick book recommendation provided some value to you. Thanks for reading today!
